My Basmati Bat Mitzvah

Author(s): Paula Freedman

Childrens

Perfect for the tween audience who loved My Summer in Pink & Green, this delightful debut novel is the humorous story of Tara Feinstein, a twelve-year-old New Yorker with a Jewish father and an Indian mother. During the fall leading up to her Bat Mitzvah, Tara has a lot more than her Torah portion on her mind. Between study sessions with the rabbi, Tara deals with jealous best friends, Robotics club, a ruined heirloom sari, dress fittings, a shoplifting incident and the various expectations of both sides of her family. Amidst all this drama, Tara questions what it means to have a Bat Mitzvah and deals with her own doubts about her faith. With the cross-cultural charm of Bend It Like Beckham, this is a classic coming-of-age story and young romance with universal appeal.
